About Us
log_church_small.jpg Great Valley Presbyterian Church began prior to 1710 when the united congregation of the Welsh Tract of New Castle County, Delaware, and of the Great Valley were taken under care of the Presbytery of Philadelphia (itself formed in 1706), one of 12 congregations constituting Presbyterianism in this country at that time.

The two settlements did not long remain united, as the settlers of Great Valley became a separate congregation by a written compact dated October 10, 1714. "The  Presbyterian Congregation of Tredyffrin in the County of Chester,” as it is legally titled, is the second oldest continuing Presbyterian congregation in Pennsylvania, and is the mother church of the Presbytery of Chester, which was later merged into Donegal Presbytery. (The church was incorporated by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1788.) Great Valley has been in continuous existence on this site since its compact,  though the main portion of the present sanctuary dates from 1890.

1922_church_small.jpgPrior to the development of Great Valley Corporate Center and the growth of suburban housing, GVPC was a little country church, made up for the most part of farmers and their families. With growth in the area has come growth in the church, and over the years there have been a series of additions to the physical plant in order to continue to minister to a growing congregation. Through all those changes, however, Great Valley Presbyterian Church has continued to be “an historic church exalting the historic message.”

sanctuary_door_475sq.jpgThroughout nearly all of that history, Great Valley had been affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and its predecessor denominations. However, on June 24, 2007, the congregation voted to disaffiliate from the PC(USA) and to affiliate with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. That transition was recognized by the Presbytery of Donegal at its March 25, 2008 meeting when, in executive session, the presbytery voted unanimously to approve the recommendation of its Administrative Commission to dismiss Great Valley Presbyterian Church to the Evangelical Presbyterian Church.

The EPC website (http://www.epc.org ) describes the denomination as “both evangelical and Presbyterian. We are evangelical in our zeal for the Gospel, as well as, evangelism, missions and living obediently as followers of Jesus. At the same time, we are rooted deeply in the Protestant Reformation and especially the theological and pastoral work of John Calvin. We embrace the Westminster Confession of Faith as our doctrinal standard and the rule of spiritually mature elders linked together regionally as the best way to guide local congregations.”

This description well fits Great Valley’s understanding and embrace of our historic faith. We are a Christ-centered, Bible-believing, missionally-focused congregation of over 265 members of all ages. Our purpose as a church is “to bring glory to God by enabling all people to become fully-devoted followers of the Lord Jesus Christ.” We endeavor to fulfill our purpose through a variety of ministry and mission initiatives, with which you can familiarize yourself by browsing our website.

Today, as we stand at the threshold of our fourth century of ministry, we acknowledge with gratitude the faithfulness of our founders while seeking to be sensitive and relevant to the needs of the changing world in which we live. Ever an historic church, Great Valley Presbyterian Church continues to be a people who are “grounded in grace, serving in love, living in joy.”

Organist - Sharon Smoker

sharon_2010 Sharon’s life has always been characterized by church music. A native of Trumbull, CT, she began serving her church during her high school years by singing in the youth choir, touring with the New Dawn Singers and  participating in the release of their album.  She also substituted for the church organist.   She earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Wheaton College (Wheaton, Illinois) with a major in organ and a minor in piano. Since then, Sharon has served the Lord and His people in a number of church locations, from the Midwest to New York state and then Maryland before moving to Pennsylvania. Sharon joined Great Valley’s staff as church organist in 2000.  She plays for all worship services, works with the Worship Committee and pastor to integrate the music with the sermon themes, and plays for special events, as requested.

Sharon and her husband, Steve, whom she met at Wheaton, are actively involved in the life of Great Valley.  In addition to her music responsibilities, she and Steve are members of a small group, and Steve leads the Questers Sunday School Class.  When she is not teaching piano or practicing the organ, Sharon can be found pursuing her favorite sports:  tennis, biking, kayaking, and hiking.  When a change of pace is called for, Sharon enjoys scrapbooking. The Smokers have four adult children who were a part of GVPC during their high school and college years, and who stay connected through their frequent visits back home.
