About Us

With the exception of the First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia (1698), Great Valley is the oldest Presbyterian Church in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  It was founded prior to 1710 and formally organized in 1714, by Welsh immigrants who left their country and came to America to settle in the shelter of Penn’s colony in order to secure freedom of worship for themselves and their children.

For nearly 300 years it has faithfully proclaimed the Good News that Christ loves us, came to die for our sins, and wants to have a personal relationship with each of us.  Since the calling of the first pastor, Rev. David Evans, in 1720, twenty-two pastors, including our current pastor, Rev. Dan Stewart, have served our congregation .

The original log church, erected in 1720, was located north of where the old vault building now stands in the cemetery.  It is marked by the grave of Thomas Hutchinson, whose monument stands where the pulpit once stood.  The cornerstone for the second church was laid in 1793, on the same day that George Washington laid the cornerstone of the Capital building in Washington, DC.  In 1888, the wooden second church was razed and a third church, of stone, was built on the same footprint.  The sanctuary was renovated and expanded in 1968, and a Christian Education building was added in 1970. In 1980, the library, gym and nursery, as well as additional classrooms, were added to complete the structure we worship in today. In 2007, a major renovation project was completed which included adding a commercial-quality kitchen, renovating the Fellowship Hall and lower-level classrooms, and installing an elevator to make all three floors of the building accessible to the physically-challenged.

From small beginnings in colonial times, Great Valley has grown with the area and the country. Today the Church confronts the greatest opportunities and the greatest challenges in its long history.  We face the future with an unshakable faith in the God who controls history.  We celebrate our heritage and our traditions, but more importantly, we rejoice in God’s grace as those who know Jesus Christ as the Lord and Savior of the world.
