Local Mission Opportunities |
Thank you for considering joining us as we serve a number of local needs … and those in need. We can certainly use your help in a variety of ways. Please read through the list below.1. Philadelphia Homeless Run, an initiative started by one of our members, takes food, clothing and words of encouragement into center city Philadelphia on the third Saturday of each month. In its third year, the team works together to gather needed supplies, prepare the food, deliver it to the men and women who gather and, using this God-given opportunity, share things that are on the hearts of these folks.
Ways to Serve:
- Volunteers prepare the food prior to the Saturday visit (in particular, we make 300 to 400 sandwiches at Great Valley on the Thursday night before the Saturday visit … this is a family oriented activity, but anyone is welcome to join us). Feel like getting out on a Thursday night? Come join us!
-
In cold weather, hot meals are especially appreciated. During certain seasons of the year, blankets are needed. At Christmas, articles of new clothing are needed.
-
Of course, you may go along on the third Saturday of the month when the group makes the trip into the city.
For more information or to volunteer, contact the church office at 610/644-1995 or send us an email via this website.
2. Good Works, Inc. is a Christian home repair ministry formed in 1988 to assist economically disadvantaged homeowners in Chester County. Their goal is to extend God’s love to those living in substandard housing; to make their homes warmer, safer, and drier; and to replace hopelessness. They are presently working in Coatesville, West Chester, and Phoenixville. For more information, go to their website – www.goodworksinc.org
Ways to Serve: As a Good Works volunteer, you will be part of a small work crew under the supervision of an experienced crew leader, who explains the tasks and monitors the work. Most of the repair work is done on Saturday workdays, with Good Works supplying the proper tools and materials. Great Valley is a “Good Neighbors Church”; we take full responsibility for a home assigned to our church and provide all the volunteer labor required to finish the home.
For more information or to volunteer, contact the church office at 610/644-1995 or send us an email via this website.
3. Community Pantry is Great Valley Church's way of collecting food and sundry items for a variety of needs (more importantly … the needy) in our area. Please see below for details.
Ways to Serve: On the 4th Sunday of each month, Great Valley collects food items, such as cereals, canned fruits, ice tea mix (or coffee in the winter), juices, small paper plates, plastic cutlery, and other paper products such as paper towels and napkins. We also collect soups and fresh fruits and vegetables. These can be dropped off during any weekday business hours (8 AM to 4 PM), or Sunday mornings, at the church. Simply bring any of these items to the church office during these hours, or drop them off in the white vestibule area and send us an email with description. Thank you!
For more information, contact the church office at 610/644-1995 or send us an email via this website.
4. City Gate serves homeless men in Coatesville, providing them with a meal and place to sleep in a Christian atmosphere. All meals are preceded by Bible study and prayer, with an emphasis on understanding and obeying God’s word in daily life. Jim Davis, the director, also visits Chester County Prison seven times weekly in order to lead Bible studies and encourage the inmates.
Ways to Serve: A local grocery store, Giant of Lionville, contributes all their day-old bakery items for City Gate’s use. Several volunteers from Great Valley pick these up daily and deliver to City Gate. We need drivers to make these deliveries. An experienced volunteer will accompany you until you are comfortable going on your own.
Contact the church office (610/644-1995) and the secretary will pass your name on to the appropriate person … or send us an email via this website.
5. Bridge of Hope is an agency dedicated to helping homeless mothers and children find stability through permanent housing, financial self-sufficiency, and a sense of worth that comes from knowing their value to God and to others. Professional staff and trained church-based mentoring groups work together with the family to assist them as they work towards these goals. For more information, check out the website www.bridgeofhopelcc.org
Ways to Serve: A mentoring group is not active at this time; however we have worked with two young mothers and their children in the past and will begin a group if there is sufficient interest. The agency also sponsors monthly get-togethers in local churches and help is always needed cooking/serving a meal. Donations of vehicles in working condition are appreciated.
Contact the church office at 610/644-1995 or send us an email via the website if you would like more information.
6. Birthright, a pregnancy care center in West Chester, serves women who find themselves pregnant and in need of some assistance. Volunteers provide a free pregnancy test, a listening ear and help with resources such as medical care, maternity clothing, housing and financial assistance so that both mother and unborn child are given the opportunity to thrive during the stress of an unplanned pregnancy. Support is provided following the birth of the child until both mother and baby are doing well.
Ways to Serve: After an initial training period, volunteers are asked to give three hours/week. The center is open weekdays, evenings and Saturdays.
For more information, contact the church office (610-644-1995) or send an email via this website and a member of Great Valley will call you.
Thank you for considering support of any of these ministries. We would be happy to answer any questions you may have!
