“But when the Hold Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power and will tell people about me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Great Valley Presbyterian Church is privileged to bring the Gospel not only to those living in the United States, but also to many living throughout the world. Our church currently provides financial support to twelve evangelical organizations and nineteen individual missionaries who are working in eleven countries or regions around the world.
Throughout the year, Great Valley Presbyterian Church hosts our missionaries, providing an opportunity for the congregation to become better acquainted with these members of our extended Great Valley family. Whether speaking from the pulpit during a Moment for Mission on a Sunday morning, presenting to an adult Sunday school class or bringing us together for an evening program, our missionaries are warmly welcomed!
Our “Sister Church” program partners us with a church in Cance, Haiti. We have the privilege of sponsoring 90 children in the church-affiliated school and have made several trips to get a chance to know and serve our brothers and sisters there.
An active Missionary Society meets monthly on the third Wednesday of each month. Speakers are given a forum during this morning meeting to share their work and prayer needs.
Fall brings an annual Missions Celebration that varies in format, always with the focus of glorifying God as we learn more about how God has been working through each of our speaker’s lives, and how we can become more involved in God’s plan. Another fall tradition is our participation in “Operation Christmas Child”, a project of Samaritan’s Purse that provides gift-filled shoeboxes for children around the world.
Serving those living nearby is an important part of Great Valley life. A year-round ministry to the homeless in Philadelphia sends a team into the city monthly to provide food, clothing and spiritual strength to our brothers and sisters who struggle on the streets every day. A team from Great Valley works monthly with Good Works, a home repair ministry that helps low-income families in Chester County. We also support through donations and volunteers, a local crisis pregnancy center, two organizations reaching students, a home for unwed mothers and a men’s shelter in Coatesville, PA. A number of families in our community receive food baskets delivered by members of the congregation at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter.
Members of the church also have the opportunity to get personally involved in short term mission trips in the United States and abroad. Individuals have traveled to Mississippi, Alaska, Haiti, France, Kenya, Peru, and India in recent years. Our youth group takes a summer mission trip each year; these experiences allow them to grow in their compassion for those less fortunate as well as in their ability to communicate their faith.
