Exploring Early Christianity: the Desert Fathers and Mothers
Led by Sandy Haney
When we look for role models and heroes of the Christian faith, we might not think to turn to the desert. In the early centuries of the church, however, the desert was full of Christian saints – women and men who dedicated their lives to God and served as role models for other believers. These desert-dwellers drew people to Christ and shaped the church for years to come. In this class, we’ll meet some of those desert fathers and mothers, learn about their lives, and consider what they can teach us today about living faithfully as followers of Christ.
The Good News of the Kingdom
Led by Rev. Robert Scott
This class will consider the central focus of Jesus' preaching and public ministry – the Kingdom of God. In Matthew 4:23, "Jesus went throughout Galilee... preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness among the people."
Kingdoms have kings; kings rule over subjects who are to submit to and obey the king. Interesting that this was the lens through which Jesus preached abundant living. Life at its best; life as it was designed to be lived is "kingdom living." God's people in God's place under God's rule enjoying God's blessing; sounds like heaven, doesn't it? But we are still 'earthlings', living this side of heaven. Yet we can, even now, taste heaven's blessedness when rightly related to the Kingdom of God. Join us in pursuing a better understanding of the good news of the Kingdom in the Gospels.
